Overview
The Braunvieh (German for Brown Cow) is not a crossbred animal. It originated in Switzerland and records show that it is the oldest original breed in the world. It is a dual purpose breed bred for meat and milk. That is the main attraction. The Braunvieh breed are exceptional vealer producers. The milk helps make bigger calves, in turn makes money. Although the Braunvieh is closely related to the Brown Swiss. The fact is, that it came about through selection.
The highest milk producing Braunvieh were continuously selected for type and production which eventually made them a breed of their own. The Brown Swiss is now the second largest dairy breed in the world with high milk production and ideal Fat:Protein ratio for cheese production. Both breeds still maintain some dominate characteristics of their ancestors. They have docile temperaments, excellent calving ability, can withstand extreme temperatures, have superior feet and legs and are exceptional converters for meat and milk production. We always refer to both breeds as the "User Friendly" breed of the beef and dairy industries. We want animals that are "No Fuss" and that will perform in different environments. Our animals tend to produce well in both feedlot and pasture based systems.
